Sony Ericsson Z525a launched by Cingular


Cingular Wireless has launched the Sony Ericsson Z525a, using it to replace the Z520a which it launched last year. The update simply adds push-to-talk.

Features of the Z525a include:

  • Push-to-talk
  • VGA camera
  • Bluetooth
  • 16 MB user memory
  • 128×160 pixel screen with 65K colors
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900

Cingular is selling the Z525a for $19.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate.

Sony Ericsson Q2 2006 profits up on Walkman sales

Sony Ericsson reported a great second quarter thanks mostly to continued brisk sales of its Walkman branded line of mobile phones. Besides selling more of its own phones, Sony Ericsson updated its projection industry wide and is now expecting 950 million unit sales for the year, up from its original estimate of 900m.

Figures from the second quarter (all comparisons are made to the year ago quarter unless noted):
  • Net revenue up 41% to €2.27 billion
  • Net profit up 91% to €143 million
  • Total phone shipments hit 15.7 million, up 33%
  • 1/4 of Sony Ericsson's shipments were Walkman branded and the company has now hit the 10 million milestone with that category

As part of a European phone launch, Sony Ericsson announced the W710i. The sport-themed Walkman branded handset reminds of Nokia's new athletic themed 5500. It features a motion sensor to track speed, distance and time. Several fitness applications come standard on the handset. But besides athletics, the W710i is a full-featured handset with music playback functions.

Features of the Sony Ericsson W710i include:

  • Quad Band EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
  • Main display: 176×220 pixel screen with 262k colors
  • Outer-display: 128×128 pixels, 4-level orange on black
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot, 512mb card included

Sony Ericsson expects to begin shipping the W710i in the third quarter. It will come in either Performance Graphite or Hatha Violet.
